Which AWS Certification Should You Get First in 2026?
A no-nonsense guide to picking your first AWS certification in 2026 — Cloud Practitioner vs Solutions Architect Associate, who each is for, and how to know you're ready before you pay the exam fee.
Short answer: if you're new to the cloud, start with the AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner (CLF-C02). If you already work with AWS day to day and want a role-relevant credential, skip straight to the AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate (SAA-C03). Everything below explains why, so you don't waste a $100–$150 exam fee on the wrong test.
The two certifications most people choose between
AWS offers a dozen certifications, but for your first one the real decision is almost always between two:
| Cloud Practitioner (CLF-C02) | Solutions Architect – Associate (SAA-C03) | |
|---|---|---|
| Level | Foundational | Associate |
| Who it's for | Beginners, career switchers, sales/PM/finance roles touching cloud | Engineers, architects, anyone building on AWS |
| Assumes hands-on AWS? | No | Yes — real service knowledge |
| Exam cost (USD) | ~$100 | ~$150 |
| Questions / time | 65 / 90 min | 65 / 130 min |
| Passing score | 700 / 1000 | 720 / 1000 |
| Typical prep time | 2–4 weeks | 6–10 weeks |
Start with Cloud Practitioner if…
- You're new to cloud computing and want a structured way to learn the vocabulary (regions, IAM, S3, EC2, billing).
- Your role is adjacent to engineering — sales, project management, finance, recruiting — and you need to speak AWS credibly.
- You want a fast, affordable win that proves momentum before committing to a harder exam.
Cloud Practitioner is broad and shallow: it covers what AWS does and how billing and support work, without asking you to design anything. Most people pass it in a few weeks of focused study.
Go straight to Solutions Architect Associate if…
- You already use AWS at work or in personal projects and know your way around the console.
- You want a credential that hiring managers actually screen for — SAA-C03 is the most widely requested AWS associate cert in job listings.
- You're comfortable with scenario questions: "the app needs to be highly available and cost-optimized — which architecture?"
SAA-C03 rewards judgment, not memorization. It hands you a business scenario and asks for the best trade-off across cost, performance, resilience and security. That's why raw flashcards don't cut it — you need to practice the reasoning.
What about Developer or SysOps Associate?
Both are excellent, but they're usually a second certification, not a first. Solutions Architect Associate gives you the broadest foundation of the associate tier; Developer and SysOps go deep on narrower slices (application integration and operations, respectively). Get SAA-C03 first, then specialize.
The mistake that costs people the exam fee
The single most common reason people fail an AWS exam is booking it before they're actually ready — they finish a video course, feel confident, and walk in cold. AWS associate exams are scenario-based, and passive learning doesn't build the pattern recognition they test.
Before you pay $100–$150, get an honest read on where you stand. CertLand's free Radar diagnostic scores you domain by domain and tells you whether you're exam-ready or still have gaps — no signup, no credit card. If you're not ready, it builds a study plan around your weak areas so you don't waste the attempt.
A simple decision, then get practicing
- New to cloud? → Cloud Practitioner (CLF-C02).
- Already building on AWS? → Solutions Architect Associate (SAA-C03).
- Not sure you're ready for either? → run a free readiness diagnostic first, then practice real exam-style questions with explanations until you're consistently passing.
Whichever you pick, the fastest path to passing is the same: practice under exam conditions, review why every answer is right or wrong, and only book the real thing once your practice scores are comfortably above the passing line.
